About me

With over 25 years of experience as a Christian therapist, I offer a combination of seasoned wisdom, current relevance and flexible interventions. I have seen trends come and go in the fields of psychology and counseling, so I like to home in on your needs and tailor treatment modalities to your particular circumstances and expectations. I believe that one's spiritual and emotional growth are interdependent upon one another, so depending on your wishes, I incorporate scripture, prayer and/or spiritual interventions.

I specialize in helping you overcome life's speed bumps - being stuck, restlessness, grief, depression, anxiety and trauma (I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional). I enjoy working with individuals of all ages, families and with partners/marriages. I have worked in every conceivable setting - inpatient, outpatient, day treatment, residential, in-home, private practice and, of course, virtual! My "pet topics" are neuropsychology, PTSD/ADHD and media psychology. My pioneering work with online counseling in the 90s (pre-Google!) was featured on Oprah's network, Glamour Magazine and I've presented at the American Association for Christian Counselors convention, so I come to you with the highest of standards in the field.

I typically employ faith-based cognitive-behavioral therapy, skills-building from dialectical-behavioral therapy and neurotherapy (teaching about how your mind-body chemicals spur your feelings which lead to thoughts, behaviors and habits). I believe that people change when they are ready to accept God's will for their wellbeing.

My goal is to help you get ready to change and then to support you through change. When we open ourselves up to His will and those changes, we become better equipped to further carry out His will. Healing from our hurts frees us to serve Him in a broader capacity...and God uses our hurts to magnify His strength through us, that we might be a testimony to others because of the paths we've walked.

Let's create a treatment plan that is both realistic and challenging for you - one that involves a precise balance of safety and risk, comfort and courage. My clients say I'm easy and fun to work with because of the combination of my personality, experience and because I have 4 children of my own (ages 9-19, one special needs)...and thus I use a balanced combination of compassion, reality and humor. Because of the changes God has worked in my life and the challenges he has given me, I now in turn welcome the opportunity to help you through the changes God has in store for you. Change can lead to joy and enlightenment, to greater awareness of both self and God. Perhaps He has called us to work together for His greater good - I welcome His will in both our lives!

Barbara is wonderful. She is insightful, compassionate, knowledgeable and seems to always hone in on the deeper issue below the issue we are discussing.

She's been very helpful in my journey of building boundaries in my life for some difficult relatives. Thoughtful, caring, -- in seasons when I'm busy she doesn't lose faith in me even when it's been a week or two since I was able to update her.

She is very consistent, shares helpful and relative information, and redirects my negative thinking into a better way of seeing things. She makes a point to always be encouraging, kind, and polite, and she reminds me of progress that I have made, despite the more defeating moments.

Barbara is very kind and patient! Even when life becomes overwhelming for me and I'm not able to respond in a timely manner, she keeps up with her contact and drops by to send blessings whenever possible. I'm very thankful for her!

Barbara has been a most excellent help and comfort in leading to my recovery. I have much to thank her for, most of all being a constant companion, listening without judgment, and giving great advice. Thank you Barbara for all your hard work, and bless you!

Barbara has been wonderful! She is helping me work through lots of serious stuff - anxiety and the things that can result from an anxiety disorder. I like the way she can explain what is going on physically in my body and brain and actually gives me direction in what to do. She also makes me feel very safe to open up and not judgmental and I like that. I highly recommend.

Barbara Leigh has been a Godsend. I am so grateful for Faithful Counseling. Therapy has been a light in a long, dark tunnel for me. Knowing someone cares, is praying for me, and is able to offer me counsel and Christ-centered wisdom that I need, means each week my tunnel of anxiety, depression and a hurtful past gets shorter, and I'm that much closer to the light.
