Hello. My name is Dr. William (Bill) Walker, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Alabama. I have formerly been licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and licensed as a Marriage & Family Therapist in Alabama and Texas.
I have 25 years' experience providing counseling services to clients and many years' experience as a university professor teaching and training others to become become counselors themselves. I have provided counseling services to people in a variety of settings, including community mental health centers, university clinics, hospitals, and private practice.
I received my doctoral degree in Counselor Education from Texas A&M University (Commerce). I have two Masters degrees: one in Mental Health Counseling and one in Religious Studies.
My post-doctoral training took place at the University of Alabama, Birmingham School of Medicine/Hospital in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology.
My specializations are in the treatment of anxiety and depression, but my wide-ranging experience makes me confident in dealing effectively with numerous mental health issues.
In therapy, my approach is to be respectful, down-to-earth, and very practical. All that matters is you getting better, with 'better' being defined by you. My job is to offer a safe, secure environment and use my experience and expertise to help you successfully resolve your problem and become the person you desire to be.
My personality leads me to be loyal and dependable as your counselor and to work hard for you. I promise to offer my best in working alongside you as you achieve your goals.
I prefer to counsel from a Christian/Biblical worldview. All truth is ultimately God's truth. God has established His way in His Word - the Bible. Any behavior that contradicts God's ways is not acceptable. My counseling approach is a combination of the Bible and the secular. The Bible always defines right and wrong. I will use secular techniques to help you align your life issues more closely to God's Biblical standard. These techniques might include journaling, role-playing, examining dysfunctional attitudes by listing and outlining them, etc.
I am not dogmatic in my approach and allow you to lead the counseling in the direction you want to go, along with my professional input. If you need me to guide, I am happy to do so, but only with regular input from you as we work together.
