I am a licensed mental health counselor in Florida with over 3 years work in community mental health and 18 years experience in private practice, including 14 years as a certified clinical trainer for other counselors. I work a great deal with adult survivors of childhood abuse, but also with those dealing with depression and anxiety.
I completed a Bachelors Degree in Bible and Christian Education in Florida then completed a Masters Degree in Ohio at a dual enrollment program, which was partly at Ashland University, partly at the school's Theological Seminary and partly at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. I completed internships at both Cleveland Psychiatric Institute and Lutheran Medical Center of Cleveland, both of which are large teaching hospitals.
I believe the best counseling technique is the one that helps the person seeking help to feel better. To that end, I use a variety of cognitive techniques in my work. In other words, techniques that assist individuals who feel "stuck" to look at their situation from different angles and from that new perspective, work out new methods for resolution. No two problems are ever exactly the same, so I make it my personal objective to listen very carefully to each person and in a very open and non-judgmental way, do my best to understand what each situation feels like when looking out through their eyes. I have experience with both relatively mild and very severe types of problems. Even though I do have a denominational background I work very strenuously to avoid introducing any one particular church doctrine into my work and refer those kinds of questions back to the client's church leadership for clarification.
I do offer video sessions at specified times when I am in my office and have a reliable high speed connection. Phone sessions are always available at times posted according to my Live Chat schedule.

Brenda was absolutely refreshing and a joy to have as a counselor, I'm sad that it has to end so soon but she's helped me fix my foundation and I feel like I'm equipped with the current mindset and tools to succeed from here on out. I'm very appropriate of her attentiveness and care poured into me from her. If I need to return, I know who I'm requesting by name, Brenda Carlson.
I'm very thankful for this counseling.
Brenda is a wonderful listener and I have been at ease in opening up to her and have been in full confidence of her abilities. She is still my counselor.
Great counselor. Very supportive wise guidance.
Brenda is an awesome counselor and quick to understand what I'm telling her. She has helped me get through some difficult times. She's been a great help! Thanks Brenda!
I am very pleased with the timely responses Brenda gave me. I feel she tried very hard to understand the core of my problem, without knowing much about me. She gave me ideas and suggestions to work on in the future, and I pray in time, with God's help, I will be able to improve some of my thinking. Talking to Brenda was important to me, and I pray for future contacts with her, if needed.
Brenda consistently walks me through some deep painful yet necessary places in my soul, which I have successfully ignored through various unhealthy methods for at least 45 years. Ecclesiastes tells us there's a time for everything and I'm so grateful that my time for working through these issues is gifted with her knowledge, grace and compassion.
She is a great counselor and provided me with helpful resources regarding my concerns with my mom and her alcoholism.
Brenda is amazing she really listens to what you are feeling and gives extremely life changing support and expertise. She has definitely helped me get through some of the toughest times of my life and i appreciate all the support she has give me over the past couple of months. Thank you for all that you do.
Brenda has been very honest and so helpful
Brenda has been listening to me and was able to gave me insight on where my problem stemmed from. We worked together in trying to find what that was and she has been patient with my going back and forth with her. She was able to recommend a book for me that gave me new perspective about myself. Above all, as my first time counseling, she was able to make me feel comfortable and guided me through her questions to get the information that she needed.
The most terrific of all!
Brenda is able to ask the right questions to get the important information she needs to get a understanding of my situation. She has given me many suggestions to help me. She's been very supportive and kind using my faith when needed but not preachy or overbearing about it.
We've made a lot of progress in a short period of time.
