I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of Illinois with over 25 years of experience in the mental health field. I am an African-American female located in the Chicago land area, and have helped individuals, families, couples, and groups, from all walks of life. I have worked with people dealing with issues such as: trauma, stress, abuse, neglect, abandonment, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, codependency, unresolved conflict, family separation, and criminal behavior. As a Christian therapist, I also help people with issues of faith and spiritual matters, if requested. I have practiced in urban, suburban, and rural areas in a number of different settings that include community mental health centers, health clinics, residential facilities, schools, and private group practices. I have also taught counseling and psychology as an adjunct professor, having provided instruction at seven different colleges and universities. This is in addition to conducting workshops on mental health and wellness.
I do not operate according to the medical model and don't work with issues pertaining to psychotropic medications or imbalanced brain chemistry. I operate from the perspective that we all have choices, and need to make healthy ones in order to live mentally, emotionally, and spiritually healthy lives. There is no magic in counseling. Problems did not arise overnight, and they won't be resolved overnight. Counseling, in my view, is about change, and change takes work. If you choose to work with me, you should be interested in working towards things getting better, not on things remaining the same. Healing is a journey. It is a process that takes time.
My style of counseling is "conversational". It must be a two-way dialogue with you setting the agenda. I don't dictate to people what they should talk about, how they should think or feel, or tell people what to do. We work together to find ways to help improve your situations. I offer a compassionate, understanding approach and believe every person should be treated with respect and dignity no matter their background or circumstances.

I thank God for Dr. April. I appreciate her insight, her revelation, her wisdom and how she applies the word of God to our sessions. She's been helpful during a time I really needed someone to speak with.
She is very patient, and I can tell that she is actively listening, which is important to me. I wish there was a face to face, but this is the best I can do with virtual. She doesn't speak too much, but I appreciate her approach as it makes me feel safe to open up.
My experience with Dr. April has been my first interaction with a therapist. I have resisted seeking therapy for years; determined to handle everything alone. After hitting new lows in my life, I finally sought help and was connected to Dr. April. While this is all still new to me, Dr. April has been great. She has listened without judging me and that is huge for me. I know even after a short time that she will be real with me and give me insights that I missed. Dr. April has made this step in my life a positive one. Thank you.
Dr. April has been a huge help to me during a rough time.
Dr. April is great!
