Debra Schwarze

About Me

My name is Debra Schwarze and I am licensed as a professional counselor in Illinois and Wisconsin. I hold a master's degree in art therapy from Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and a master's degree in counseling from George Fox University (a Christian university) in Newberg, Oregon. I have over 25 years experience working in community mental health, school, faith-based, health system and private practice settings.
I utilize an eclectic approach in counseling, primarily using cognitive behavioral (CBT), DBT informed, client-centered and expressive therapies. The "glue" that holds these techniques together is my Christian world view that guides my practice as a mental health professional. I have experience working with clients who have diagnoses of major depression, bipolar disorder, all types of anxiety issues, ADHD, life change events, grief and cancer.
I believe that the mental health field has ignored the spiritual component of treatment for far too long. As God has made us body, mind and spirit, I know that all of these areas need to be addressed to successfully address issues related to our mental health.
Congratulations on making the first step to seek help. It can be a difficult task, and I appreciate the courage that it took for you to consider counseling. It's ok and natural to be a little anxious and fearful as you approach treatment. It is my job as the counselor to provide a safe and supportive environment that allows you to talk about the issues that you want to address. It is your job to be as open and honest as possible in order to effectively deal with the issues that God leads us to address. I believe that God will play an integral role in your treatment and your healing process.
I look forward to meeting you and beginning your God directed journey to improved mental health.

Debra is very helpful, insightful and has helped to validate the feelings that I have had. She is an excellent listener and again helped me put words to my feelings. I would highly recommend her.
