Dr. Dorothee Ischler

About Me

I have been a psychologist and marriage and family therapist for over 30 years. I studied clinical psychology for 6 years and received a degree of “Diplomate in Psychology” from the University of Bochum, Germany. I came to the United States in the winter of 1984 to study Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Minnesota, Family Social Science Department. Years later, I received a Doctorate of Marriage and Family Therapy (DMFT) from Argosy University / Minnesota School of Professional Psychology.

I work with clients who suffer from mood disorders (anxiety and depression), eating disorders, addiction, trauma (PTSD), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. I have a special interest in incorporating the connection between mind, body, and spirit in my therapeutic work. I have extensive training in integrative psychotherapy. I combine Eastern and Western Wisdom traditions, mindfulness training, and evidence-based psychotherapy approaches. My approach to therapy is eclectic. I incorporate elements of behavioral cognitive therapy and various systems therapies. I am also a practitioner of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.

Over the 43 years of studying various healing approaches, I have learned many different therapeutic modalities. I like to create a healing space for my clients by being open, warm, and respectful, and collaboratively chose which therapy method would work best with a particular client.
In Christian Counseling, in particular, we might choose to utilize Jungian depth psychology and the Enneagram.

In my free time, I enjoy being with her family, reading, and listening to various podcasts. During Covid's social distancing, I've enjoyed gardening and cooking. I like the outdoors most of all, walking, biking, and cross-country skiing.

I thought I knew myself pretty well but to have someone else read your worksheets, talk with you, and then decipher attributes about yourself in a way that you haven’t seen yourself is very interesting to note and begin to make better choices and discern the needs at hand. Extremely helpful! Absolutely a great fit my counselor has been! Everything that I was looking for, esp that she’s my age or older was the one thing I felt I needed too!
