I am a responsive and understanding therapist, licensed to work with people in Minnesota and California. Whether you have undergone years of psychotherapy or are just now thinking about talking to someone for the first time, I am prepared to support and guide you on this part of your journey. My faith has carried me through the darkest of times, and I have seen God work mightily in the lives of those who call upon Him. I come from a family of clergy members; my great-grandfather, grandfather, father and several different uncles have been preachers. God has led me down a different path; instead of leading from a pulpit, He has me caring for His people in a quiet, confidential, individual way.
This background has given me the ability to assess a situation thoroughly and help you create a clear treatment plan to focus our energy in therapy. I am results-oriented and solution-focused with a passion for healing. While I have experience with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, and many other mental health issues, my specialties are treating trauma and substance abuse.
I have extensive experience helping people with PTSD from childhood abuse, from sexual assaults, from violence, from accidents of various kinds and from medical issues. As a former first responder, I have had great success working with military, law enforcement, emergency medical and firefighting personnel. Anxiety is a hallmark of the problems caused by trauma, so I have become adept at treating anxiety disorders as well. This translates well into helping people with career struggles, performance anxiety, stress from school and relationship issues.
I have managed a 22 bed residential treatment center that handled every kind of substance use issue you can imagine. I have worked with people who are addicted to alcohol and benzodiazapines, which can create deadly withdrawal symptoms. I have helped people struggling with opioids like prescription painkillers, heroin and fentanyl. I have worked with people addicted to all forms of methamphetamines, cocaine and inhalants.
Substance use disorders affect not only the user, but their friends, family, co-workers and more. Whether you or someone you care about is struggling with substances, you will find me ready and equipped to discuss the biology, psychology and sociology of substance use disorders. Understanding the disease of addiction and the many treatment options available will help you to make informed, cost effective choices moving forward. I will offer consistent, skillful help and support on your journey to health and wellness in the context of our mutual faith.

Within the short time that I have spent being counseled by Jim he has already helped me identify things I can try and do to change my own behavior. I came into this knowing something wasn't right with the way I handled my relationship but I had no idea how to "fix" it. Jim has been able to give me prospective and hope. Anyone would benefit from the wise counsel that Jim gives, just make sure you're ready to take the next steps to do what is suggested.
Jim (James) was an amazing counselor. He focused directly on whatever I was experiencing at the time and provided great insight to any questions I may have had. He is kind and nonjudgmental. Truly a blessing, definitely recommend to anyone!
I feel that he listens and understands what my main concerns are. And I believe that his advice is helpful, relevant and inspired by the Holy Spirit.
