Hello. I am a licensed psychologist in Texas with over 20 years experience providing therapy to a wide range of populations. I am passionate and committed to those individuals who honor me with their trust in asking for help in their struggles. My approach to counseling is to focus on you as an individual. Each person I work with has strengths and coping skills he or she has utilized to get through life. Some are good and can be built on and strengthened. Others are ineffective or harmful and can be altered. I approach everyone with a sense of openness, honesty, caring, empathy, and understanding. In therapy, I am supportive, direct, and nonjudgmental. I try to provide practical guidance for the problems my clients are experiencing. My goal is for everyone I work with to have the best quality of life possible, to have the tools to cope with the problems life throws at all of us, and to gain insight into who they are as a unique, special individual.
My career has provided me a range of experiences working with challenging populations. I began my career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, where I worked with male and female inmates struggling with substance addictions, depression, anxiety, adjustment issues, and suicidal ideation. Additionally, I served as team leader for a crisis response team that provided Psychological First Aid to staff and families following a traumatic incident (such as a natural disaster, assault, riot, or hostage situation). Additionally, my team would provide food and shelter, as needed, for staff and their families in the event of an emergency. In 2010, I transferred to the Veterans' Health Administration. In this position, I work with veterans struggling with PTSD, depression, anxiety, substance and other addictions, suicidal ideation, marriage and family problems, and adjusting back to civilian life. For the past five years, I also had a private practice where I worked with members of my community providing psychological assessments for disability claims, vocational rehabilitation, and foster care, as well as counseling.
My therapeutic approach is eclectic, meaning I draw from techniques and theories of many different treatment styles. However, my emphasis is on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which focuses on how the way an individual thinks and what he or she tell themselves impacts their social and emotional functioning. This therapeutic flexibility allows me to customize my approach to the specific needs of a client. This approach also allows me to utilize techniques that are most effective for specific client's situation.
I am a Christian and accepted Jesus as my Savior at 13 years old. Both my personal and professional experiences are shaped by my faith, and I utilize Biblical principles regularly in my counseling, even if I do not overtly reference them as such. I believe Biblical principles provide the groundwork for mental health and being content in our lives. The men and women in the Bible have struggled with many of the same issues we have, and we can use their examples to help us in our struggles. I pray daily for all of my clients, and often pray with my believing clients.

He’s excellent to work with
Dr. Briley was great. He helped me work through a very difficult situation and come out of it stronger/wiser. In addition to that he also was somewhat of a mentor to me in my walk back to my faith. I would definitely recommend him as he is kind, a very good listener, and knows how to take you step by step to a place of healing. Thank you Dr. Briley
Mr. Briley has always been prompt and courteous, demonstrated professionalism and he went the extra mile in assisting me with the purchase of an Alpha STIM product. He set up a video call to help me learn how to use it.
Skilled and experienced. Asks excellent questions and provides very helpful advice that brings significant insight and comfort.
I am blessed to have Dr. Briley as my counselor. He’s very attentive, really listens to me & always offers very good advice and really helpful suggestions on how I can help myself with whatever I’m struggling with. I highly recommend Dr. Briley to anyone who needs counseling.
A kind gentle man who listens carefully.
Josh Briley has far exceeded my expectations. He is knowledgeable, and yet down-to-earth and approachable. He listens, provides insight and accountability, without harshness or passing judgement. He has been extremely supportive, and has already had an immensely positive effect on me and my situation. I have confidence that with God and Dr. Briley guiding me along the way, I will have everything I need to overcome my struggles and step forward in the positive direction I desire for myself.
Dr. Briley has been very response to me. He is very observant and has been helping me a lot. I love the he is a strong Christian. That helps me a lot.
Dr. Briley has been patient and understanding as I have been dealing with the after effects of abuse and dealing with divorce issues. He has encouraged me spiritually through it all as well.
I have really appreciated Dr. Briley's feedback. It has made an enormous difference to my and my family's life.
Dr. Briley is a man who doesn't pull any punches and goes right to what problems he believes I may have. Doesn't let me avoid to face up to the weaknesses I have and talk about them. Also, he sets goals based upon solid theory about people with mental issues. I found the goals to be particularly helpful in examining my thinking patterns. It's only been ten days or so but I am proud to be working on my issues and becoming conscience of what I need to do to improve my behavior.
Great guy, seems to really care and is very responsive. I like him a lot! We haven't talked on the phone yet but I am looking forward to it at some point.
It's been great being able to "journal" out and work through my thoughts and emotions with Dr. Briley. He's been incredibly helpful in creating objective ways in that I can help improve my emotional well-being, and also make me feel heard.
I would highly recommend Dr. Briley to anyone suffering from PTSD or a trauma. I felt confident in his credentials and experience. He has helped me in a short amount of time.
At first I was unsure as to the effectiveness of this format (online counseling) but I am pleasantly surprised after a few weeks. For one, the format is effective as I can message my counselor, Dr. Briley, with my thoughts, perspectives, and/or questions as they come to me. Dr. Briley has responded to me in a reasonable time on a consistent basis with very insightful and helpful responses. Moreover, the chat board tracks my goals and my progress against those. Dr. Briley even checks in with me to make sure I am doing well if I haven't responded or written for a while. He seems to genuinely care. Not only do I have an advisor that I feel is accessible any time of the day (note: I am writing this review at 3AM after sending over some thoughts and questions to Dr. Briley), but I can also schedule a live chat/phone session when I need it.
In summary, I very much like both the format and the counselor I have been matched with - they are effective in helping me improve myself and my situation (thought patterns). I have actually recommended this site and Dr. Briley to a few of my friends already.
Dr. Briley is respectful, empathetic and generally cares about people. He's genuine, God-fearing and is relatable. He gives me practical and realistic advice, while challenging me to see my reality. I would definitely recommend him to everyone I know.
Dr. Briley is very understanding of my issues, he has responded very promptly and has always provided a positive, encouraging and helpful approach in his counseling.
