In John 16:33, Jesus tells us, “In this world you will have trouble...” I’m not sure what the trouble is for you today; perhaps a broken relationship, addictive behavior, a secret or debilitating fear, deteriorating physical body or out-of-control emotions. Jesus continues in the same verse, “But take heart; I have overcome the world.” So what does this mean for God’s children still struggling in a broken world?
As a Christian therapist, it is my desire to walk with you through the “trouble” and remind you (and myself!) of the Truth of the Gospel. The Gospel tells us that God loves us (Roman 8:35), that He is powerful when we are weak (2 Corinthians 12:9), that He wants what is best for us (Romans 8:28), that no person is too bad or too far gone to experience His forgiveness (Psalm 103:12), and that He can relate to us in our suffering (Hebrews 4:15).
I am a Clinical Social Worker licensed in Maryland with a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I have worked as a therapist for 8 years in hospitals, schools, and outpatient private practice, in secular and faith-based settings. I have specialized training in addictions and have extensive experience facilitating outpatient programs for adolescents and adults struggling with mood disorders and substance abuse issues. My past employment has allowed me to work with adolescents, adults, individuals, and families dealing with a wide array of issues. I am comfortable working with those struggling with anxiety, depression, addiction, life transitions, spiritual issues, grief and loss, self harm behaviors and family dynamics.
Everyone’s faith journey is different and I won’t assume to know what your own walk with God looks like at this time. While I believe that God is always “a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1), our focus on spiritual matters will be based on your comfort level during our work together. I hope to meet you!

Joy is an excellent therapist, listener and overall person. This is my first therapy experience and she has guided me to open areas that I felt should be locked and encouraged me the whole way. She listens actively and challenges in love. She is also very transparent and presents herself as an equal. I highly recommend Joy Rumsey.
I've been very encouraged through my sessions with Joy. She gets to the heart of what my struggles and goals are, and provides tools specific for improvement in the areas I need them. She is considerate and listens well. Highly recommend!
Amazing! Love her.
