Dr. Magna Porterfield

(Ph.D.)

About Me

I was born and raised in a partially religious home - partial because my mother was a believer, but my father was not. However, my mother was faithful and did her best to raise us (myself and 3 siblings - a sister and two brothers) based on Biblical principles. I actually accepted Christ into my life on a personal level when I attended college (a private university). It is my relationship with Christ that has been my "anchor" throughout the ups and downs of life . In particular, I have lost many loved ones including my younger brother, both of my parents and my first husband ( who was only in his 40s). I have also had challenges with my health - namely, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 10 years ago (but I have had no symptoms since that time). These and other experiences have deepened my walk with the Lord in a special way. And, they have enriched my work as a counselor because I can better help others "by the comfort wherewith (I have been) comforted of God." In other words, the difficulties I have experienced has helped me to have more empathy for my clients and have provided me with even more tools to help them on the path to healing.

I have training and experience in working with those struggling with depression, anxiety, stress, and related emotional concerns. In my approach with people, I do not spend much time rehearsing and exploring the past. I believe that even when people have experienced traumatic experiences, the most helpful thing for them to do is to focus on what they can do now in their present life to help them heal. So, as a result of this, I work hard to helping people understand the power of their thoughts (self talk) and its impact on their mental health. I also spend time teaching my clients about how their lifestyle habits (diet, rest, exercise, sleep, etc.) can directly affect their mood, their emotions, and their behavior. The addition of this aspect helps tremendously because it enhances the healing and recovery that can occur through counseling. In addition, I use strategies from the field of positive psychology - which focuses on human strengths (forgiveness, gratitude, happiness, etc.). I have found that this encourages those with whom I work to focus more on their positive human qualities and not merely on their presenting problems. Finally, and most importantly, I believe that God's Word has many principles that can be used to help us in all areas of our lives - not only spiritually, but emotionally, mentally and socially as well. As a result, I often incorporate these principles when I am helping people address whatever challenge their are facing in their lives.

One of my favorite Scriptures is that "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Whatever challenges you are facing, God is there for you and can help you. And, one of the ways that He does this is by utilizing people with skills and knowledge to teach others His principles and ways of living. I believe that, by God's grace, He can use me in that way I hope you will give me that opportunity. would love to help you!

So if you are up to the challenge and are willing to try some new and different ways for healing and for optimal mental health, I would love to work with you. Remember, with Him there are possibilities!

Thank you Dr. Porterfield for working with me over the past couple of weeks. Dr. Porterfield has been very helpful, resourceful, and utilized a variety of counseling/therapy tools to help me identify my areas of need while learning in a nonthreatening environment. I love the ease of use, accessibility, and additional therapeutic tools made available through this service. I connected with Dr. Porterfield on a spiritual level first and foremost and that connection enabled me to expedite the introductory getting to know one another stage and delve deeper in my areas of need. I highly recommend Dr. Porterfield and faithful counseling to anyone that has a deep appreciation for Christianity, is open to different approaches to therapy and learning, and willing to do the work.

Dr Porterfield and I are still getting to knew one another. However, I do like what I've learned of her so far. We haven't used any other method than posting as of yet, but that's fine with me. In fact I kinda like it that way, though I think at some point we'll probably do some video feeds.

Dr. Porterfield's approach is very professional and non-judgmental. Although this is a very vulnerable time in my life, I feel comfortable with inviting her in to share her Godly and clinical insight. I know that I will get through this.
