Mattie Wellmon

About Me

I am a fully licensed clinical mental health counselor licensed in North Carolina with over 5 years of experience working as a counselor and therapist. I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns, including struggling with their personal spiritual beliefs. I have found that spiritual conflict can originate from multiple sources: denomination, familial religious background, understanding/knowledge of scripture, as well as past experiences with individuals whose behaviors may or may not contradict their verbalized spiritual beliefs. It is my goal when counseling an individual specifically seeking Christian counseling, to assist them in further exploring their spiritual background and experiences, as well as explore their spiritual beliefs. I have learned through my clinical experience providing Christian counseling, that many individuals have different definitions of the term "Christian"; it is important to me to assist each individual in building/strengthening their Christian beliefs according to their core values/beliefs.

Theoretically, I work from a Cognitive-Behavioral, Person-Centered, and Solution-Focused approach. A Cognitive-Behavioral approach focuses on behavior and how behavior is reinforced or negated by what happens as a result of the behavior occurring. A Person-Centered approach is based on the philosophy that people are basically good, while also acknowledging that people must advance developmentally to become what they are intended to be and reach their full potential. A Solution-Focused approach focuses on the future and encourages the client to establish meaningful personal goals, as well as identify the available resources to reach those goals.

The theoretical approach that I utilize integrates all of the aforementioned theories and their techniques, in order to personalize counseling and make it as effective as possible for each individual client. As a client, you are in complete control and may choose to terminate our counseling relationship at any time. In my experience, the most difficult step in the counseling process is the first step; and that is being willing to ask for help.

I know how difficult asking for help can be, but if you are willing to take that first step, I would find it my privilege to assist you in working towards living a happier and healthier life!!

Mattie is great! She always responds in a timely manner. She addresses my concerns and points out other areas that I might be missing. She often sends encouraging messages and checks in with me if she hasn’t heard from me in a few days. I feel very supported yet I also feel like she is honest with me when I need to consider other ideas. Overall, I am very happy to have her helping me through this time in my life!

Being matched up with Mattie was truly a blessing. She has opened my eyes to concepts that have helped me in ways I never thought possible. Mattie is very supportive, knowledgable, and easy to talk to. She even goes the extra mile by checking in with an encouraging message if she hasn't heard from me in a while. I would highly recommend Mattie to anyone struggling with anxiety and depression.
