I grew up in the Church, and always wanted my relationship with the Lord to be firm. I cemented that at age 18, and became a teacher in response to the Lord's leading. Having taught for over 30 years, I also knew I wanted to counsel others, so got a degree in the midst of my teaching years. I started counseling locally in the addiction field, then moved on to my church's residential childcare facility for over 5 years, becoming involved with the foster care system, Department of Children's Services, and also in the formation of a drug-alcohol program for residents. I then counseled in my church's central counseling agency for over 6 years, doing lots of work with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for anxiety and depression, and using Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as adjunctive therapy for certain cognitive distortions. It was at this position that I also worked with relationship issues and concerns of senior citizens (being one myself!) Having been married many years to my best friend, and having 6 children and 20 grandchildren, it was a natural progression to talk to other parents and grandparents.
There is no magic formula for raising children, and I agree with the sage wisdom of a mentor of mine, that said, "Don't try to tell other people how to raise their children until your youngest child is at least 25 years old." Amen to that! But it certainly helps to talk to others about difficulties in life, and I cannot imagine trying to do this without faith, and depending on His Word! Maybe we could talk today?
