I have 17 years experience working with a variety of issues, including depressed patients, PTSD (combat, domestic and other traumas) anxiety, aging, and cognitive problems resulting in difficulty communicating rationally and calmly. I have worked 5 years in substance abuse, worked with homeless severely mentally ill and nine and a half years working with service members and their families. I have been a church member for most of my 67 years. More than that, I have been working of being a Christ follower and not just someone to fill a pew. Religion in and of itself may cause a person a lot of heartache and confusion or be a source of tremendous comfort. My motive in Christian counseling is not to remake your beliefs in the image of my own, but to help you come to a place in your spiritual walk where your relationship with Jesus is so vital and so comforting that you can indeed be a light in a dark place.
My perspective is more long term. As a mother and a grandmother I tend to think beyond immediate consequences and impact of one's actions.
My thought is that I need to know what you want therapy to do for you and we work together to find a path to your goal. I am less prescriptive than questioning and working to find out what fits you best. We may start with smaller goals to get you where you are going or you may have decided what you think will work best for you. Cooperation in therapy means that you can leave the therapeutic environment ready to steer your own course rather than advice giving which may cause you to second guess yourself. For therapy to be successful we must be guided by your goals and vision for yourself. If ever you feel we need a course correction I am ready and willing to offer treatment in line with your beliefs and insight.
I am strengths based in my approach. You have gotten along this far because of the strength and skills you possess. Therapy will build on the strengths you already possess and add other skills to your strength inventory. When people are depressed and anxious or have other disturbances they tend to focus on "what's wrong with me" ignoring the fact that they have already lived through 100% of the challenges life has thrown their way. Let's find out what your strength inventory is and find new skills to move you on the path that you choose.

Sharon has been great. She is always prepared to address concerns with practical tools, exercises, and at the same time ages open to changes in topic, discussion. We usually cover a lot of ground in one session.
