With 15 years of experience, my areas of interest include depression, anxiety, self-image, healing from trauma and abuse, divorce recovery, overcoming shame, life transitional issues, healing for those injured in church and ministry settings, and empowering others to pursue their dreams and career aspirations. I earned my B.A. in Political Science at Montclair State University in New Jersey in 1994 and gained my Masters in Counseling at Denver Seminary in 2002. I've been a Licensed Professional Counselor (#4201) in Colorado since 2005.
My Christianity means everything to me, and I try to make my counseling services as Christ-centered as possible. While there are no guarantees in life, I'm convinced that walking closely with the Holy Spirit is one of the best things one can do for one's growth, healing, mental health, and overall wellness. Personally, I grew up in a religious home but didn't give my life to Jesus Christ until I was age 21. It has been a wonderful and adventurous 25 years since then, and my journey of becoming a counselor was entirely led by God.
My counseling approach usually incorporates variety of professional techniques that encourage my clients to feel safe. In short, I strive hard to earn the trust of my clients so they feel free to tell me anything without the feeling of being judged and condemned. While I think I have much to offer my clientele, I am not a “know it all” therapist. I want to learn from those who have turned their pain and suffering into something beautiful.
As a resident of Westcliffe, Colorado, I enjoy hiking, cycling, and exploring the beautiful landscapes of the American West. I have biked across the USA three times, the latest trip in 2017, and have authored a memoir about my first trip, titled "Under a Triumphant Sky: A Bike Across America Story." I regularly make public presentations about my travel experiences and encourage others to live boldly and to pursue their dreams.

Steve is a wonderful listener and extremely accommodating to my schedule.
I really enjoy talking with Steve. After pretty much every video chat that we have I feel better about what ever was concerning me. He is a great listener and is very encouraging and supportive. He is very grounded in God. Steve isn’t only my counselor but a good friend.
Steve is super understanding. Gives personal examples and recommends strategies to overcome depression, stress and overwork. I’m still recovering but he has been God sent!
I believe that my loving, Heavenly Father picked/chose Steve to be my counsellor "at such a time as this". He was 'hand picked' for his ability to just listen and to treat my vulnerability with such deep respect, such care in simple quietness.
Steve is very attentive and deliberately cultivates a comfortable and safe atmosphere despite this being an online service. I'll admit, I had my doubts from the moment I began and he definitely diffused it with answering all of my questions. He is a Christian, which already made it easy for me to put down my guard. I know not everyone likes to, but if you prefer, he can also pray with you. He understands my issues, acknowledges them, and encourages me. It is now going on three weeks. He accommodates my schedule due to time difference (I'm on other part of the world) which I'm most appreciative of. He has given worksheets that help to open my eyes as I complete them and open for discussion if I'd like to go over them. I would definitely recommend Steve if you need some encouragement. I believe God has gifted him with this as I leave our conversations feeling like I'll be okay no matter my circumstance.
Steve is very responsive and attentive.
Steve is an amazing counselor. He is a wonderful listener and he does so without judgment. He is great at asking the right questions and helping you get the heart of the issues at hand. I am so thankful for the platform of Faithful Counseling and I am so thankful to God that I was matched with Steve. My experience has been fantastic and extremely beneficial.
Steve has a relaxed and friendly manner that puts you at ease while still able to demonstrate a high level of professionalism. He genuinely seems to care. I would have no hesitation in recommending him.
Steve is a fantastic counselor. He offers strong guidance on psychological matters both from a Christian perspective and in a manner that I can easily digest and grasp. He's an excellent source of emotional and psychological growth. I highly recommend him.
Steve has been awesome to work with. He really holds me accountable in a good way to make sure I'm truly getting help with what I need. He's empathetic and listens really well. I look forward to our sessions together.
Steve Garuda is a warm and friendly man. We bonded easily and quickly. I am very comfortable with him and feel safe telling him the truth about my depression, marriage and my past.
He has helped me in a short amount of time and I would highly recommend him.
Steve is truly a wonderful human being & this is directly translated into his counseling sessions. This was my first time working with a professional counselor & online at that & I found my sessions so fulfilling. I actually really look forward to our communications, knowing that I will get a comforting response with Godly guidance. In the past, I looked to my church pastors for one on one counseling, This was just as good & to some extent better as I was able to communicate any time. May God truly bless Steve for his prayers & guidance.
I'm grateful that I came across this website. What a great concept. I feel very comfortable to share on this type of format. I have the best counselor. He's attentive, knowledgeable and most of all he's a Godly man who cares. Thanks to all of you!
I appreciate that the counseling is from a Christian perspective - very helpful.
Thank you Steve! We appreciated the help you gave!
