With 15 years of experience, my areas of interest include depression, anxiety, self-image, healing from trauma and abuse, divorce recovery, overcoming shame, life transitional issues, healing for those injured in church and ministry settings, and empowering others to pursue their dreams and career aspirations. I earned my B.A. in Political Science at Montclair State University in New Jersey in 1994 and gained my Masters in Counseling at Denver Seminary in 2002. I've been a Licensed Professional Counselor (#4201) in Colorado since 2005.
My Christianity means everything to me, and I try to make my counseling services as Christ-centered as possible. While there are no guarantees in life, I'm convinced that walking closely with the Holy Spirit is one of the best things one can do for one's growth, healing, mental health, and overall wellness. Personally, I grew up in a religious home but didn't give my life to Jesus Christ until I was age 21. It has been a wonderful and adventurous 25 years since then, and my journey of becoming a counselor was entirely led by God.
My counseling approach usually incorporates variety of professional techniques that encourage my clients to feel safe. In short, I strive hard to earn the trust of my clients so they feel free to tell me anything without the feeling of being judged and condemned. While I think I have much to offer my clientele, I am not a “know it all” therapist. I want to learn from those who have turned their pain and suffering into something beautiful.
As a resident of Westcliffe, Colorado, I enjoy hiking, cycling, and exploring the beautiful landscapes of the American West. I have biked across the USA three times, the latest trip in 2017, and have authored a memoir about my first trip, titled "Under a Triumphant Sky: A Bike Across America Story." I regularly make public presentations about my travel experiences and encourage others to live boldly and to pursue their dreams.

Steve has been awesome to work with. He really holds me accountable in a good way to make sure I'm truly getting help with what I need. He's empathetic and listens really well. I look forward to our sessions together.
Steve has been great so far, he listens to my concerns, offers me insight and has been very helpful.
Steve is super empathetic and is working hard to determine what the root cause of my unhappiness, negative thoughts and sadness is. He has asked the right questions to open me up and continues to do so. He is super proactive in reaching out to follow up and give me action plans. Steve is the best!!
Steve Garuda is a warm and friendly man. We bonded easily and quickly. I am very comfortable with him and feel safe telling him the truth about my depression, marriage and my past.
He has helped me in a short amount of time and I would highly recommend him.
Steve is truly a wonderful human being & this is directly translated into his counseling sessions. This was my first time working with a professional counselor & online at that & I found my sessions so fulfilling. I actually really look forward to our communications, knowing that I will get a comforting response with Godly guidance. In the past, I looked to my church pastors for one on one counseling, This was just as good & to some extent better as I was able to communicate any time. May God truly bless Steve for his prayers & guidance.
I'm grateful that I came across this website. What a great concept. I feel very comfortable to share on this type of format. I have the best counselor. He's attentive, knowledgeable and most of all he's a Godly man who cares. Thanks to all of you!
I appreciate that the counseling is from a Christian perspective - very helpful.
Thank you Steve! We appreciated the help you gave!
