Hello! My name is Benjamin Bess. I have been practicing as a therapist in Kentucky for over 4 years now, and I have worked in the mental health field for over 8 years. I consider it an honor when individuals share with me moments of their lives and experience, and permit me to guide them through difficult chapters along their journey. I admire your courage in coming to ask me for help.
I have been a believer in Jesus Christ, his divinity, atoning death, burial, and new-life-giving resurrection, for over 20 years. My spiritual beliefs were, and continue to be, a large part of what drives my counseling. Jesus, in his life here on earth, made himself close to the brokenhearted, and when I first started working in the field I felt Jesus would have been right there with me, were he still here in the flesh.
Jesus is the model for me when it comes to my counseling approach. I see Jesus, in the words of Henri Nouwen, as a “wounded healer.” The author of The Book of Hebrews echoes this idea when he states, “For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted,” and again when he states, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 2:18; 4:15). In my approach I take a similar viewpoint, seeing myself as a “wounded healer” of sorts. I come to the table humbly, realizing, as David realized, it is only by the grace of God that he has brought me thus far (2 Samuel 7:18). I do not see myself as the authority on all things life; rather, I see the Bible, the inspired and inerrant Word of God, as being the authority, and myself struggling alongside you.
In my approach, I utilize principles of Cognitive Therapy, which focus on identifying the lies we so often believe about ourselves, and the world, and then aligning our beliefs more with the Truth. I use the Bible as the primary source of Truth, against which the lies of the enemy (Satan) are combated. I believe for someone who has been born again the enemy only has one weapon against us, and that is to whisper lies. We can believe those lies, or we can combat them with the Truth of God’s Word. However, when we believe the lies, they manifest themselves in the form of bondage, which can take numerous forms for different people. I am here to help guide you in that process, with the goal of equipping you to fight the lies more easily and find freedom from the bondage. As The Apostle Paul writes to the believers in Corinth, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom” (2 Corinthians 3:17).
I look forward to working with you as we strive to equip ourselves with the Truth.
