My name is Chinell Collins. I am a licensed professional counselor in Pennsylvania. I was raised in a Christian family. I started singing in the church at the age of 6. At the age of 15 I started traveling to various churches to minister through spoken word for the congregations. Also at 15, I began homeless and prison outreach. I would feed the homeless and donate clothing, and I would go into prisons and homeless shelters and hold church services. I continue to involve myself in as much homeless ministry as possible. In college, I started a campus ministry called "Impact," which resulted in over 300 college students giving their life to Christ. Impact provided church services on campus, transportation to church on Sundays, Christian concerts, alternative outings to parties (i.e. theme park trips), etc. I am currently very active in my church home. I serve on the worship team, I participate in outreach activities, I still minister through spoken word, I am involved in the youth ministry, I am involved in the dance ministry, and I teach at times.
Christianity has shaped my counseling career as it has taught me to make all of my decisions with love, keeping the best interest of the individual in mind. It also has taught me to never give up on anyone. I have worked with clients with severe mental health conditions and seen them thinking clearly. I have worked with clients with severe addictions and seen them living a life of sobriety. Even when a person is ready to give up on themselves, I never give up.
My main therapeutic approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, however, I like to integrate Choice Theory, Mindfulness, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Person-Centered and Positive Psychology techniques as needed. I also utilize Motivational Interviewing.
My favorite scripture is Psalm 139:14 "I will praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." The entire passage is about how God formed us all with such care, and knows us all. This reminds me that every person has a unique purpose. God loves them. We are all made in His perfect image. It is great for battling low self-esteem.
