I graduated from Ashland Theological Seminary with a Master’s degree in Clinical Counseling twelve years after accepting Christ. I was at a business conference in the fall of 2000 and attended a church service that was part of the conference. It is there that I felt that the Lord was speaking directly to me and at age 45 turned my live over to Christ and was baptized a couple of months later. I grew up in the Methodist church as a kid and then after college walked away from formal religion. My marriage was falling apart and I was burnt out at work from pursuing success in all the wrong places. Accepting Christ changed my whole perspective on life. Unfortunately my marriage did not survive and I moved to Columbus Ohio for a job and found the Vineyard church which nurtured my new found faith for ten years or more. People had always said that I was good with kids and the people that worked for me in business, thought I was a good listener. After praying for a couple of years I enrolled in the Masters program and began the journey to become a Christian Counselor. I worked full time for one year while going to grad school but finally left the business world. I grew up believing that obtaining good schooling and climbing the corporate ladder was the key to success. The Lord has been awesome in seeing me through this total change in direction in my mid fifties when many of my friends thought I was crazy. I trusted that the Lord would bring me through this and he did.
I love to work with people who are still exploring faith or have gotten stuck. I also like working with people to integrate faith more into their everyday lives. Transitions in life seemed to be difficult and I have had many myself and find that I work with many who are transitioning and seeking God's will. I am non-judgmental about what you might bring to counseling about faith. It is part of my ethical responsibilities to ask about faith but in no way impose it on anyone. I believe in prayer as an absolute essential to counseling and whether clients want to pray in session, I always pray outside of session for my clients. I have found that reading the Bible and other key books have helped me grow in my spiritual walk. I like to recommend and use those resources as well. I find that these days I think about Philippians 4: 13-14 many times a day to encourage my work and remind myself that Christ said that we can have access to the same power that rose Jesus from the dead.
