As a former Lutheran pastor, I ministered to many people whose life and faith journeys were made more difficult because of personal and relational issues. In my training as a pastoral counselor, I held a strong belief that, based on my understanding of the Incarnation, not only did God become flesh in the person of Jesus, but that I might also embody something of God's presence when I met with clients. During my clinical training, my supervisor, not well-versed in Lutheran theology, suggested "If you might embody something of God with your clients, is it also true that your clients could embody something of God TO YOU?" Indeed. The counseling relationship establishes a sacred ground for healing, growth, and understanding. I value the opportunity, indeed am humbled by it, to walk with my clients in their life and faith journeys.
